港大理學院計劃取消「天文」及「數學／物理」主修事件簿

港大學生會理學會早於三月中旬公開理學院院長 Professor Matthew R Evans 就計劃取消「天文」及「數學／物理」主修之回應後，引起全校嘩然。本報經深入調查，從一名理學院職員獲得內部消息，希望還原事件經過，以及透露理學院的內部計劃。

一月中旬，Professor Matthew R Evans 約見所有理學院學系主任。席間，物理學系主任(Head of Department of Physics) 謝茂海教授獲Professor Matthew R Evans 通知，理學院「決定」取消「天文」及「數學／物理」兩主修科。

二月下旬至三月上旬，所有物理學系講師級或以上之教職員皆獲通知以上「決定」，並收到相關文件。隨後，不少研究生從指導教授口中得悉相關「決定」，消息由此散播至全校。然而，此「決定」並未於理學院院務委員會作任何討論。

三月中旬，Professor Matthew R Evans 於回應港大學生會理學會的電郵中，公開承認以上「決定」(原文: it is indeed the case that the Faculty has decided to close the majors of Astronomy and Maths/Physics to new entrants from 2018/19.)，惹來全校爭議。

三月二十三日，Professor Matthew R Evans 與學生代表會面，席間有學生代表問及為何選擇取消「天文」及「數學／物理」主修，Professor Evan回答至今只獲物理學系回應對該「決定」感到遺憾(regretted)，並未獲強烈反對，又認為這「決定」是「無爭議性的第一步」(the first and least controversial step)。同時，有同學擔心理學院取消兩主修科後，將會削減相關課程數目，並詢問假若講師希望保留其任教課程，理學院會否先徵詢其意見，Professor Matthew R Evans 斷然拒絕，並指講師收取大學給予的薪酬，輪不到他們置否 (Because the University pays them, it is not up to them to be fine)。

三月二十四日，物理學系舉行主任論壇 (Head’s Forum)，中譯主題為「本科生課程的現在與未來」(原題: The Present And Future For Our Undergraduate Curricula)，並邀請Professor Matthew R Evans 出席。席間不少學生、助教及研究助理就取消兩主修科向Professor Matthew R Evans 提出質問。有會眾質問取消兩主修科的原因，Professor Matthew R Evans 回應指現有教與學學生評估(Student Evaluation of Teaching and Learning)當中，相比其他學院，學生對理學院提供的課程感到不滿，故認為課程架構有改善空間 (The feedback that you fill in, you tell us that your satisfaction of the courses is lower than those from the rest of the University)。Professor Matthew R Evans 補充，不少講師現在教授多於一點五個課程，高於政府大學資助要求。他認為每位講師應集中時間教授一個課程，從而提升課程質素，故此需要簡化課程架構。有人詢問Professor Matthew R Evans 能否預料將來理學院會減少相關主修的課程數目 (Are you implying you are going to cut courses?)，Professor Matthew R Evans 直接表示會，該回應令在場學生嘩然。然而，在坐所有講師級或以上的教職員未有發表任何意見。

據本報得悉，部份物理學系學生及舊生將收集聯署，向副校長(教與學) Professor Ian Holliday 表達對Professor Matthew R Evans 及其「決定」的不滿。本報會密切留意事態發展。
